John Hopkins warmed up for qualifying by setting the fastest time in the final free practice session for the Chinese Grand Prix.
The 23-year-old American lapped the Shanghai circuit in 2:00.571 – the quickest time set at the track all weekend, as Bridgestone-tyred bikes continued to show their prowess.
Championship leader Casey Stoner was second on his Ducati – 0.076 seconds behind – while Yamaha's Colin Edwards led the rest of the chasers on his Yamaha.
Spaniard Dani Pedrosa – who won at Shanghai last year – and five-time world champion Valentino Rossi were fourth and fifth for Repsol Honda and Yamaha respectively with Loris Capirossi on the second Ducati next up.
World Champion Nicky Hayden failed to repeat his Friday form in seventh while Marco Melandri's Gresini Honda, Randy de Puniet's sole remaining Kawasaki and Chris Vermeulen's Suzuki completed the top ten.
